Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals have been generally utilized for diagnostic systems. Nowadays artificial intelligence-based systems have been proposed to classify EEG signals to ease diagnosis process. However, machine learning models have generally been used deep learning based classification model to reach high classification accuracies. This work focuses classification epilepsy attacks using EEG signals with a lightweight and simple classification model. Hence, an automated EEG classification model is presented. The used phases of the presented automated EEG classification model are (i) multileveled feature generation using one-dimensional (1D) octal-pattern (OP) and discrete wavelet transform (DWT). Here, main feature generation function is the presented octal-pattern. DWT is employed for level creation. By employing DWT frequency coefficients of the EEG signal is obtained and octal-pattern generates texture features from raw EEG signal and wavelet coefficients. This DWT and octal-pattern based feature generator extracts 128 × 8 = 1024 (Octal-pattern generates 128 features from a signal, 8 signal are used in the feature generation 1 raw EEG and 7 wavelet low-pass filter coefficients). (ii) To select the most useful features, neighborhood component analysis (NCA) is deployed and 128 features are selected. (iii) The selected features are feed to k nearest neighborhood classifier. To test this model, an epilepsy seizure dataset is used and 96.0% accuracy is attained for five categories. The results clearly denoted the success of the presented octal-pattern based epilepsy classification model

Electrocardiogram (ECG) signals have been widely used to diagnose heart arrhythmias. In order to detect these arrhythmias using ECG signals, many machine learning methods have been presented. In this article, a novel Discrete Wavelet Concatenated Mesh Tree (DW-CMT) and ternary chess pattern (TCP) based ECG signal recognition method is presented. The proposed ECG signal recognition method consists of 4 main steps: pre-processing using DW-CMT, feature extraction using TCP, feature selection, and classification. In the pre-processing step, 15 sub-bands of an ECG signals are generated. By using TCP, features are extracted from the sub-bands of the ECG signal. The extracted features are concatenated in the feature concatenation phase. In order to select distinctive features, the neighborhood component analysis (NCA) based feature selection method is used and the 128 most distinctive features are selected. In order to demonstrate the strength of the extracted and selected features, conventional classifiers which are linear discriminant analysis (LDA), k-nearest neighbor (k-NN), support vector machine (SVM) are used. To test the success of the proposed method, the MIT-BIH dataset and St. Petersburg dataset were used. The 96.60% maximum classification accuracy is achieved for the MIT-BIH dataset using k-NN and 97.80% accuracy is achieved using SVM for St. Petersburg ECG dataset. The obtained results clearly prove the success of the proposed method.</p

RECOMED: A Comprehensive Pharmaceutical Recommendation System

A comprehensive pharmaceutical recommendation system was designed based on the patients and drugs features extracted from Drugs.com and Druglib.com. First, data from these databases were combined, and a dataset of patients and drug information was built. Secondly, the patients and drugs were clustered, and then the recommendation was performed using different ratings provided by patients, and importantly by the knowledge obtained from patients and drug specifications, and considering drug interactions. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first group to consider patients conditions and history in the proposed approach for selecting a specific medicine appropriate for that particular user. Our approach applies artificial intelligence (AI) models for the implementation. Sentiment analysis using natural language processing approaches is employed in pre-processing along with neural network-based methods and recommender system algorithms for modeling the system. In our work, patients conditions and drugs features are used for making two models based on matrix factorization. Then we used drug interaction to filter drugs with severe or mild interactions with other drugs. We developed a deep learning model for recommending drugs by using data from 2304 patients as a training set, and then we used data from 660 patients as our validation set. After that, we used knowledge from critical information about drugs and combined the outcome of the model into a knowledge-based system with the rules obtained from constraints on taking medicine.Comment: 39 pages, 14 figures, 13 table

Arrhythmia detection using deep convolutional neural network with long duration ECG signals

This article presents a new deep learning approach for cardiac arrhythmia (17 classes) detection based on long-duration electrocardiography (ECG) signal analysis. Cardiovascular disease prevention is one of the most important tasks of any health care system as about 50 million people are at risk of heart disease in the world. Although automatic analysis of ECG signal is very popular, current methods are not satisfactory. The goal of our research was to design a new method based on deep learning to efficiently and quickly classify cardiac arrhythmias. Described research are based on 1000 ECG signal fragments from the MIT - BIH Arrhythmia database for one lead (MLII) from 45 persons. Approach based on the analysis of 10-s ECG signal fragments (not a single QRS complex) is applied (on average, 13 times less classifications/analysis). A complete end-to-end structure was designed instead of the hand-crafted feature extraction and selection used in traditional methods. Our main contribution is to design a new 1D-Convolutional Neural Network model (1D-CNN). The proposed method is 1) efficient, 2) fast (real-time classification) 3) non-complex and 4) simple to use (combined feature extraction and selection, and classification in one stage). Deep 1D-CNN achieved a recognition overall accuracy of 17 cardiac arrhythmia disorders (classes) at a level of 91.33% and classification time per single sample of 0.015 s. Compared to the current research, our results are one of the best results to date, and our solution can be implemented in mobile devices and cloud computing

AI-Powered Diagnosis of Skin Cancer: A Contemporary Review, Open Challenges and Future Research Directions

    No full text
Skin cancer continues to remain one of the major healthcare issues across the globe. If diagnosed early, skin cancer can be treated successfully. While early diagnosis is paramount for an effective cure for cancer, the current process requires the involvement of skin cancer specialists, which makes it an expensive procedure and not easily available and affordable in developing countries. This dearth of skin cancer specialists has given rise to the need to develop automated diagnosis systems. In this context, Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based methods have been proposed. These systems can assist in the early detection of skin cancer and can consequently lower its morbidity, and, in turn, alleviate the mortality rate associated with it. Machine learning and deep learning are branches of AI that deal with statistical modeling and inference, which progressively learn from data fed into them to predict desired objectives and characteristics. This survey focuses on Machine Learning and Deep Learning techniques deployed in the field of skin cancer diagnosis, while maintaining a balance between both techniques. A comparison is made to widely used datasets and prevalent review papers, discussing automated skin cancer diagnosis. The study also discusses the insights and lessons yielded by the prior works. The survey culminates with future direction and scope, which will subsequently help in addressing the challenges faced within automated skin cancer diagnosis

A new approach to reduce the teleportation cost and execution time in Distributed Quantum Circuits (DQCs) was proposed in the present paper. DQCs, a well-known solution, have been applied to solve the problem of maintaining a large number of qubits next to each other. In the distributed quantum system, the qubits are transferred to another subsystem by a quantum protocol like teleportation. Hence, a novel method was proposed to optimize the number of teleportation and to reduce the execution time for generating DQC. To this end, first, the quantum circuit was reordered according to the qubits placement to improve the computational execution time, and then the quantum circuit was modeled as a graph. Finally, we combined the genetic algorithm (GA) and the modified tabu search algorithm (MTS) to partition the graph model in order to obtain a distributed quantum circuit aimed at reducing the number of teleportation costs. A significant reduction in teleportation cost (TC) and execution time (ET) was obtained in benchmark circuits. In particular, we performed a more accurate optimization than the previous approaches, and the proposed approach yielded the best results for several benchmark circuits
